Alto Moncayo Moncayo has returned! The big, bad, most delicious hombre in Campo de Borja is clearing the aisle of all of the weak insipid, watered down wines that are pretenders to the throne. True to its nature the 2014 Alto Moncayo Moncayo is a super sexy, up front, lavish, concentrated, dense, full bodied, opulent, super intense offering that is sure to please. If you’re looking for a light, see through, dainty wine; this ain’t it! Still one of Spain’s finest if not the world’s finest Grenache’s it is outstanding and still a terrific bargain. Aromas of blackberry bramble, flowers, ground black pepper, black cherry liqueur, black raspberries, fresh brewed espresso, sea salt, cola, soy and mulberry, copious blue and black stone fruit, balsamic notes and dark chocolate form the core of an aromatic ambrosia that translates into gorgeously seductive flavors in your mouth. While the texture this vintage isn’t as weighty as some past vintages it is no less intense, opulent, and engaging. The flavors of the 2014 Alto Moncayo Moncayo are still palate coating offering loads of crushed minerals, hints of citrus zest verve, accompanied by explosive notes of kirsch liqueur, lavender, crushed spring flowers, dark chocolate, espresso, and a mélange of mixed berries and cola. The 2014 Alto Moncayo offers a smooth, subtle, sophisticated elegance rarely seen in wines at this price point. This is probably the most elegant balanced Alto Moncayo that I have tasted. I could give you a pages long dissertation on how the wine is made, the soil composition, the micro climates and all that but I won’t! What I will tell you is that once again the Alto Moncayo is kicking bottles and taking names. It is utterly delicious and one of the best bottles in this price range in the world. Chris Ringland has produced another winner for us. As always, this is a small production allocated wine that will disappear quickly. Don’t miss out on yours or all you’ll be able to do is read about it.
